Introducing - The Los Angeles Nursing Resource Center (LANRC)

We look forward to working together within the Los Angeles Nursing community as we partner to implement strategies which support and advance nursing education.

BACKGROUND
The Nursing Resource Center (NRC) provides a centralized, customer-focused suite of internet-based education services for schools of nursing and clinical agencies.  The goal of the NRC is to help expand capacity for nurse education through the use of the Centralized Clinical Placement System (CCPS) to manage clinical placements and the Centralized Faculty Resource Center (CFRC) to identify qualified nursing faculty.

These services were initially developed through the collaborative efforts of the Foundation for California Community Colleges and the California Institute for Nursing & Health Care, and implemented in Northern California supported by grants from the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation. The system is now available for use in other markets and has also been implemented in South Florida and Gulf Coast Texas regions.

The LA Journey

Initiatives to address the nursing shortage are a shared priority for improvement in California. SB 1309 directed the Chancellor's Office to fund the development of online nursing resource systems targeted at improving the nursing shortage and resulted in funding being awarded to LA County.

Grant requirements:

  • securing participation of at least 75% of LA County RN program colleges and universities
  • collaboration with CCC, UC, CSU and healthcare partners to plan, develop, and implement a regional nursing resource center
  • hiring experienced technical and web design personnel
  • providing education for use of the system
College of the Canyons and the California Institute for Nursing and Healthcare (CINHC)worked together to secure a regional system for LA County and provided matching resources to support implementation.

In May, a focused group of nursing leaders from LA County schools and hospitals viewed available systems and selected the Centralized Clinical Placement System (CCPS)  for implementation. Purchased from the Foundation for California Community Colleges (FCCC), annual licensing fees will be paid by individual schools and hospitals using the system. Grant funding from the Chancellors Office for the development of CCPS will support the first year of licensing fees for public nursing schools.  At the end of the grant period, the project must be self-sustaining through annual user licensing fees.

From Vision To Reality
LANRC information sessions were held for the Nursing Leadership community in the fall by the Project Team:
  • Sue Albert, RN, MN, MHA, Dean of Allied Health, College of the Canyons
  • Pat Chambers, RN, BSN, MBA, Southern California Regional Coordinator, CINHC
  • Kathy DeGuerre, Technical Manager, Foundation for California Community Colleges
  • Carolyn Orlowski, RN, MSN, LANRC Project Coordinator, CINHC
  • Kristine Yahn, MBA, RN, Director of Health Care Programs, Foundation for California Community Colleges

An Advisory Board was formed with interested nursing leaders from academia and service to represent the larger group and make decisions needed to customize the CCPS in Los Angeles County.  The first LANRC Advisory Board meeting was conducted in November and co-chaired by: Jamie Eisenberg, RN, MSN, Director of Education, Methodist Hospital, Arcadia, and Wendy Taylor, DNSc, CNS, RN, Nursing Program Director, California State University, Northridge.

We are looking for additional Advisory Board Members from Clinical Service settings.  If you are interested in participating, please contact Carolyn@cinhc.org.

The Centralized Clinical Placement System  (CCPS)
CCPS Banner photo

What is CCPS?
The CCPS is a fully automated internet-based clinical placement planning tool that optimizes nursing student clinical placements by allowing schools to quickly match their needs with placement opportunities. The system allows clinical agencies to review and respond to requests in a standard format and to manage a single schedule while increasing student capacity. The system is hosted and maintained at Foundation for California Community Colleges and supported by an online user manual, training videos, and other resources under the HELP tab:  www.ccps.foundationccc.org

System Benefits:
  • Online and real-time
  • Visibility of clinical availability
  • Ability to expand capacity
  • Easy to manage placement requests
  • Automatic email notifications
  • Data and decisions controlled by school/service coordinators
  • No software to install
Planning for Implementation

Planning is underway for LA County RN schools and their clinical service partners/hospitals to begin using the CCPS in early spring 2008 for student placements starting with the Fall/Winter 2008 terms.  The Los Angeles internet portal to access CCPS will be available in January.

Guidelines for using the CCPS in LA County will be finalized this month by the Advisory Board.  Training programs for Hospital and School Coordinators are scheduled to start January 22 through the end of February.  In March, student placement schedules will be requested/proposed on the web based system by school coordinators, and reviewed, confirmed or declined electronically by hospital coordinators. Reports features are available to help manage the process.

Please visit www.LosAngelesNRC.org after the first of the year for information on CCPS, CFRC, and other resources and links important to hospitals and schools. The LANRC site does not require a password to access general information.  Participants using the CCPS system for student placements will be provided site specific passwords during the training sessions for secure access to scheduling.
